Alright, finally back in action! I meant to do this review weeks ago, but with school and other events happening, it was hard to find some time to just sit and write. But alas, I’m now back in full swing, with some great things to say about A Day To Remember’s new album “What Separates Me From You”. They guys released news via live video of their fourth album in mid September. And in all honesty, November 16th couldn’t have been any slower to get to, but it was well worth the wait.
I started listening to ADTR about a year and a half ago, finding them through their song “If It Means A Lot To You”. Of course, it probably wasn’t the best way to introduce the band if I wanted to hear their general sound. But regardless, I loved them for the soft and hard stuff. They were quickly added to my Top Favorite Bands. Reason being? Truly unlike any other hardcore band that I’ve ever heard. They’re a perfect mix of metal and punk, screaming and singing, whatever you want to call it. It’s stuff that you can sing to, but also bang your head to. Perfect.
Ever got caught up in an album so much that once it ended, you’re like “Wait, what? It’s done?” Yeah, that’s pretty much how I felt at first listen. And still how I feel after listening to it 20+ times. So good, so compelling, that I just listened to it again. And again. You think I’m exaggerating? Take a listen to “2nd Sucks”. Mortal Kombat Intro? Win. I think this song has the same effect as “I’m Made Of Wax, Larry, What Are You Made Of?” and “The Downfall of Us All” did back on the earlier albums. And don’t just listen to it, blow the speakers off your wall when you do. Do that for the entire album, in fact.
Song by song, the albums gets better and better. First song is always important; you always need a good base and taste of what’s to come. “Sticks and Bricks” starts off the album nicely, with the opening lyrics saying “I am fueled by all forms of failure. I paid the price, so I’ll take what’s mine.” Very in-your-face, which I love. From start to finish, “What Separates Me From You” paints a picture, and can almost be described as a wavelength. So smooth and transitional. Oh yes, deep I know. But it’s really no exaggeration. This is probably the best album they’ve come out with. Album after album, they continue to write songs that keep you moving, singing, or what-have-you.
Though the entire 30+ minutes of the album is amazing all together, I have my personal faves that are in need of some attention. Besides “2nd Sucks”, the follow up “Better Off This Way” is great, lyrically, and is very appealing to the ear. “All I Want” comes in third, again, for the lyrics. The only thing I felt was missing from the album was something soft. I would’ve loved to hear something acoustic. But then again, this particular album is so upbeat, that if there were something slower, it could’ve thrown off the flow. Who knows though, maybe we’ll hear a nice little b-side or something.
So yep, this album’s got a full five stars from me. Make sure to buy this album if you haven’t already! And can anyone say “Warped Tour 2011″? This year will be epic. I can already tell that the lineup is gonna be better than last years. Buy the album on iTunes now for $9.99!

I love this review, had the same feeling about the record myself. Only difference was, I was introduced to ‘You Had Me At Hello.’ Lol, five stars? WIN!
