Early October seemed to be a prime time to be releasing new albums all over. With Bring Me The Horizon’s release October 5th, album sales weren’t so hot around here, probably reaching about 4,000 (according to online sources) in the US. The album did reach number 16 on Billboards top Hard rock albums, which is a definite plus. Elsewhere, the album reached No. 1 on the Australian Albums Chart, and No. 13 on the UK Album Chart.
Bring Me The Horizon is definitely a new found band for me. The new album was given to me as a gift from a friend at college. “You’ve seriously gotta check these guys out, they’re definitely worth a listen” they pointed out. So I popped in the CD, and basically fell in love at first listen. You can definitely say that the music tastes are very broad, from Valencia, to Bruno Mars, and then all the way across the music spectrum to Bring Me The Horizon.
My first observation of this album? The breakdowns. Wow, the breakdowns are just too epic to put into words. Especially in “It Never Ends”. As a matter of fact, that entire song is probably my favorite, next to “Crucify Me”. Crucify Me was a great way to start. It basically defined the whole album for me in six minutes. Lyrically, it’s amazing. And of course, my favorite part of the song is when the album name is said four or five times over. The voices compliment this song so well, especially when it cuts in and out, making it sound broken, yet complimentary to the drums and guitar. Both songs have key points where the song just comes together, and creates this feel for the entire album. Lyrically, “Alligator Blood” really sticks out from the others. It starts out with a bang, literally: “Let’s play a game of Russian Roulette. I’ll load the gun, you place the bets.” Somewhat evil, yes? That’s the best, when lyrics are kept on the mild side, but are somewhat suggestive, too.
I love BMTH’s ability to slow things down, too. Not a lot of hardcore bands have that ability. And after awhile it becomes boring, listening to similar songs. Whether it be right in the middle of a song, or just a simple intro like in “Blessed With A Curse”, they did a pretty good job at keeping the pace of the album steady, regardless of some parts being slower.
What separates BMTH from a lot of other hardcore bands is their ability to use unique sound effects without overdoing it. You see it almost on every single track, and every time, it’s a little different from the last. Personal favorite effect? Take a listen to “Visions.” Sounds pretty simple, up until about a minute and a half into the track. The guitar cuts in and out again, but completely compliments the drums happening in the background. It only lasts a few seconds, but probably one of the best parts of the album. Kinda reminds me of a strobe light effect, only through music. Random, yet put together.
I’m seriously gonna have to invest in the previous albums. But for this one, four out of five from me. Now I’m beyond pumped to see them at AP Tour! If you haven’t gotten your tickets to see Bring Me The Horizon already, get them here! And get the album here, or on iTunes for $9.99!
