Interview with Love Via Dance Machine

Henry Liu February 6, 2011 1

Love Via Dance Machine, the band who called themselves the pop-punk band from the future of 2050. Have begun hitting the music industry with a new pop-punk sound. They currently study at Berklee College together and all from Boston, Massachusetts. Frontman Eric “E-3000″ Grava teamed up with Jimmy Coberly the drummer, Alex Badanes the guitarist, and Izaiah Yelle the bassist. The four boys recently made their way through the wintry ice to play a show at The Outback Teen Center in New Canaan, Connecticut. Before they played their set, I took a second to request Grava for an interview after their set. He accepted the interview and here are his answers to my questions:

How was the band named Love Via Dance Machine?

Well before the band started, the way it started was what I created these techno demos on my computer which I titled it Love Via Dance Machine, and from there it eventually became the band name after. When we formed the band the name stuck and we thought it fits so we kept it. I think it fits our music very well too.

What do you love about being on tour?

Being on tour is really fun, it’s kind of like being on a long family road trip except its with your best friends. It’s like you do the most awesomeness thing every which you do every night. So I say it’s awesome, and plus its cool to clear your head to see other places where you’re normally are – because I feel that it makes it feel better about things in life.

What is your most embarrassing song to sing in the shower?

We are the type of people that we just do like weird stuff so my friends expect me to sing anything but maybe something like a Britney Spears or one of the new Miley Cyrus. I think one of those I would be caught singing, not that embarrassed, maybe just a “Oh….”

What are your main influences?

Influences, I wanted to be a band because of Blink-182 because they got me to play music. Like they taught me how to play music in like an easy way just by playing their songs on the guitar. Other influences are I love the band Augustana, Brighten, and Saves The Day.

Before the band, what was your dream career?

Before I wanted to be an actor or movie director.

What’s the most craziest thing a fan have done in your music career?

Craziest thing? Someone made a website about Izaiah with his name in it, which was crazy to us. We have a lot of crazy stories which we can’t say them all. Haha

What’s your favorite song to listen to and perform live?

General like ever? Lemme think, that’s tough, I don’t know what that’ll be. ‘I Still Ain’t Over You,’ by Augustana. It’s definitely a tie between Emergency and Butterfly.  I like do something different with regular songs and acoustic songs.

Who are your main supporters and how so?

Well obviously all of the people like my family, the first and foremost, and the people who come out and tell us to keep doing what we love. So the people who come to our shows and our closest friends.

What was the best performance you had? Why?

Tough question because we had a show at the Upstairs or Downstairs Middle Easts. We recently played with We The Kings which was a really fun performance on a huge stage.

What’s the relationship with you and the band?

Oh my God, everyone is like a different brother to me. Well Jimmy our drummer is like the Dad. Izaiah’s like kind of like the mom and same time like a brother or older sister. We’re kind of like a giant family who’s screwed up. At the same time we love each other. Which is why we keep playing together.

Favorite venue to play at?

That is such an awesome question! I would say The Space in Hamden, Connecticut that is just a fun venue to play at. In Boston I would say the Middle East, and The Big Easy in Maine.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Hopefully touring or I like say that I like to keep pushing and moving out with the band. I have a huge interest towards the West Coast. I honestly want to live there some day in California but I want to keep pushing.

What is your favorite song written?

I’m not sure. They’re all different and I like them for different reasons. We actually wrote two new songs which we will be releasing that we co-wrote with Andrew Goldstein from The Friday Night Boys. It was the most awesome experience as a band.

How did all of you meet one another?

We actually met each other in college. I went to Berklee College for music, and still there. I met our guitarist player Alex next door, Izaiah in our Harmony class and he knew Jimmy. We all had this idea and we ran for it. Anything could have different if it weren’t with this group of guys and our timing.

What do you have to offer for fans in 2011?

New songs and a lot more shows and a lot more fun. Maybe some action figures. We want to come out with some action figures. Just more fun. Look out for us.

Personally, I admit they did play an amazing show. They got the crowd jumping and wanting more. If you are already a fan, look out for some action figures as Eric have recently stated earlier in the interview along with the co-written songs with Andrew Goldstein. If you never heard of the boys before, you can stream their latest songs on MySpace and Purevolume. If you liked what you heard, feel free to “like”  their Facebook fan page as they release their most up-to-date news.
