Molly Moore is an up and coming singer-songwriter. At 18, Molly has over a decade of experience in music and acting and began writing original songs at the age of 9. Inspired by both mainstream pop artists such as Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson, and pop punk bands like Say Anything and Good Charlotte, Molly’s unique pop-rock sound is a combination of real life stories and catchy melodious hooks. Her lyrics capture experiences and emotions in a personable and candid way. Her strong, honest vocals combined with edgy guitars and electro-pop synths result in an organic sound that will keep you listening and wanting more.
I was able to ask Molly a few questions about her musical career and here below you will see and read the most honest answers given to me:
What got you into the music industry?
My whole family is musical so that definitely played a huge part in my interest in music. I always loved singing when I was growing up and started writing poetry and songs when I was 8 or 9. Then when I was 15 I met my first manager and decided to really try and make a career out of it.
What were your influences and why?
I grew up listening to a lot of pop… Britney Spears, N’Sync, Pink… the whole nine yards. Then in my early teens I was really into pop rock like Good Charlotte and Fall Out Boy. Those bands and artists definitely inspired me to write music. Also, I love Simon & Garfunkel, Alanis Morisette, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
How are your friends about your music career?
They’re all relatively supportive. Some don’t understand it as much as others do… they’re like “you’re really not going to college just to pursue music? You’re insane”. That’s okay though… I know it’s insane.
From past experiences, how does it feel to play in front of a crowd?
It’s the best and scariest experience all at once. I love performing, it’s in my blood and there’s no other feeling like it… but it’s also terrifying. They could hate me. They could tear me off the stage. I think that’s why I love it though… I’m kind of an adrenaline junkie.
How do you describe your sound for those who haven’t listened to your music?
Alanis Morissette meets Kesha meets Neon Trees. Is that possible? Who knows.
For your present fans, what is the craziest thing that they have done for you?
Nothing too crazy… yet. Ask me again in 3 years, if things go my way I’ll have a million answers for you! Haha.
Describe your music background.
I did a lot of musical theater when I was younger and then started recording demo tapes when I was 15. I’ve kind of just been recording and playing as much as possible since then.
Five years from now, where do you see yourself?
Ideally? Touring, making records, writing for other artists, making movies, inspiring other people to follow their dreams. And hopefully living in southern California.
Where do you get the ideas of your music?
I write from my own experiences, mostly. It’s funny… sometimes I’m super outspoken and other times, with certain people, I’ll hardly ever speak up about what I’m feeling. That’s where writing comes in for me. It’s therapy.
What was your career before the music?
I’m 18… so I was a student. I graduated High School early to focus on music. I also grew up acting in commercials and stuff so there’s that too.
Do you sing in the shower? If yes, what is the most embarrassing song you’ve sung?
Absolutely. I sing a lot of Broadway show tunes. It’s basically a given that at least once a week, I attempt the high note in “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from Dreamgirls. Someone usually comes running to make sure I’m okay.
How does your family take your music career?
They’re fully supportive. I am SO thankful for that… I don’t think I could pursue a career in such a competitive field without their support.
In September of 2008, Molly recorded three of her original songs with producer and engineer Andros Rodriguez of Quad Studios. Molly’s new EP was produced and engineered by Jake Antelis in Hillside, New Jersey in January, 2010. Molly is currently working with various producers and songwriters and also playing acoustic sets in NYC.
