I gotta say, with a great tour following up all the way until February and the release of this new album “Disambiguation”, Underoath has had one hell of a year. And a good one at that! I heard nothing but good things from the NT Team about the concert out in Poughkeepsie back last week, and really wish I could have been there to experience it for myself. But what I have been able to do is listen to this new album nonstop, and like the feedback on the tour, I’ve got nothing but praises for the guys.
“Disambiguation” had been out for only a few hours, and immediately, I got the album, not really knowing what to expect. After a full listen of the entire thing, I was pleasantly surprised to hear something new. In “Define the Great Line”, the feel was a bit more in-your-face, faster paced. “Disambiguation” definitely hints some of the same feel, but it’s safe to say that the albums a little bit slower at times.
My first observation: the album starts and finishes in a very unique way. “In Division” and “In Completion” (no coincidence there), they compliment one another. Now of course, at first glance, both seem very different. One starts the album off, and one ends it. But I believe that in a good album, the starting and ending song need to have a relationship with each other. In this sense, the relationship is very strong. Particularly, I see it in the chorus of both songs. It took me a few listens to find this, but listen to them back to back. You’ll know exactly what I mean after a few listens.
The award for personal fave song definitely goes to “Who Will Guard the Guardians”. There are a lot of great aspects to this song, including the lyrics; very meaningful. Love the guitar in it as well. It’s a slower song, but it’s just as powerful as any other track. Runner up would definitely have to be the track before this one, “A Divine Eradication”. The song sounds amazing, and again, the lyrics are great. My guess is that it’s about a past addiction, and trying to relapse from it. Lyrics like that (whether sung or screamed), always hit a soft spot in me, hearing someone that has had to struggle through something like that.
As for the rest of the album, it’s a perfect mix of fast and slow tracks, with great lyrics all around. It may not be my favorite album of the bunch, but the guys did a great job at mixing it up, and keeping the pace steady, which is important. Four out of five stars from me; definitely worth a listen. Great job, guys!
If you guys haven’t had a chance to see them yet, they’re on tour until Feburary with A Day To Remember, so get your tickets if they’re in your area! The albums on sale on iTunes and in a store near you!
