Yellowcard, an alternative – pop punk band from Jacksonville, Florida which features members such as Ryan Key on vocals and rhythm guitar, Sean Mackin on violin and vocals, Ryan Mendez on lead guitar and vocals, Peter Mosely on bass and vocals and Longineu W. Parsons III on the drums. The band had a unique sound including violins where it is very unusual for the genres. Where to myself it is what caught my attention to listen to them as I am a violinist myself.
It has been years since we heard of Yellowcard working on a new record or even going on a tour. It was only in April 2008, the band announced an “indefinite hiatus” where two years later on November 10th, 2010 they played their first show back together. On January 28th, the band released their first new single, ‘For You And Your Denial,’ and the second on February 22nd called, ‘Hang You Up.’ On March 22nd, 2011, the band released a new record entitled, When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes.
For now here is my review or my take on this album, just to be as brief as possible, I’ll tell you my two most favorite listened songs from the record and nail it down to tell you how much I recommend this album to you and your friends and the world beyond.
Before the record was even released, I can only say how mind blown I was to simply hear the first single, ‘For You And Your Denial.’ It was new to me but it still had some of the old songs mixed into it. I was so impressed by the violinist’s part of the single at the time since as I mentioned earlier I am a violinist myself. I just loved the beginning when Mackin began the piece, it was just pure SWEET or yet a better term, epic. The entire single just mixed in with a lot of people who’ve gone through a relationship of some sort going through a fight or break up, the chorus in the song that sung:
Can you hear the crowd? They all go wild
For you and your denial
They’re watching you break down(Break Down)
Hate me all you want, I’ll be okay
I’m half the world away
I’m letting you go now (Go Now).
Brings myself and many of letting go a relationship that took a while to let go, where then we eventually don’t care anymore. Where in the future that one girl or guy, can be mad for something, but to us, it makes us ask, “Does it even matter anymore?” In the song we let go for good and it’s for our own good. We just don’t care if they get mad. We will reveal to the world how they truly are.
Later on a second track was released which was, ‘Hang You Up.’ The new single was also different to me as I am a huge fan of Angels and Airwaves, Bullet For My Valentine, Skillet and many others where this band could not be compared. In the song we can hear tempo being slower and we can hear the smooth playing of Mackin on the violin. As you listen to the song you can easily tell that it was another relationship-type of song. It’s sings of waiting for our love to return even though the relationship was gone. We try to hold on even though the other person don’t have those feelings for us anymore. Similar to ‘For You And Your Denial’ we hear of letting go yet what’s different about it is that we still think of him/her. As we see our exes we try to get them back but for some reason we get rejected. We still have images of them with us in our minds but this time it’s colorless where as it is in black and white. We’re tired of our past and wishes to let go.
With that aside of the two songs being explained, those are my top two favorites. However, as you listen the entire record, each song from the first to last, it gets better and better. Not a single song on this record was “disappointing.” I was in love with the album. It was like being introduced to Yellowcard all over again but on a higher level. I personally thought that this was the best record they have released in their lives. Personally, the money was worth spending.
So as I close off, please give this album a chance, it’s not an album you’d regret buying ever. You seriously can’t go wrong with this record ever. For $9.99 on iTunes? That’s a pretty good deal. So what are you waiting for? Open up iTunes RIGHT NOW!
